CHS Consulting Group (CHS) was hired by Catellus Corporation as the traffic engineer for the reconfiguration of
this at-grade railroad crossing intersection. The Caltrain mainline railway crosses 16th Street immediately adjacent to
the intersection with 7th Street. The widening of 16th Street for the Mission Bay project required the reconfiguration of
the intersections with the railroad tracks and with 7th Street, and modification of traffic signals both at the railroad
crossing and at 7th Street.
CHS Consulting Group coordinated with the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (PCJPB), which operates Caltrain commuter
rail service, and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) on the signal designs and intersection geometry
modifications. CHS successfully obtained design approvals from PCJPB, SFMTA,, California Public Utilities Commission,
and Union Pacific on design for this complex intersection.
In addition, CHS prepared signing and pavement delineation design and traffic control plans for the roadway and
intersection designs along the route.
