A collaborative effort among the consultants and staff from several San Francisco
agencies, this project involves a feasibility study for a bus rapid transit (BRT)
system along Van Ness Avenue, and preparation of a joint EIS/EIR. The project
alternatives involve center running (center or side platforms) and side running
bus lanes, all of which will include low floor buses, far side stops, and a signal
Five Muni bus routes and seven Golden Gate bus routes currently operate along
Van Ness Avenue, with approximately 51 buses per hour in each direction during the peak hour.
CHS Consulting Group was responsible for directing the traffic, transit, and parking
analyses of the project. CHS also worked with the SFCTA staff on the travel forecasting task,
and with SFMTA staff on the transit operations and SYNCHRO traffic simulation analysis for
the project corridor, including five parallel streets. CHS coordinated with MUNI staff on
the modifications to MUNI bus operations along the corridor, and with P&V on the VISSIM
micro-simulation analysis. This project is currently in the EIR/EIS phase.
