BART Seismic Retrofit Design – “A” Line South Union City, CA

The BART Earthquake Safety Program is committed to providing a safe, operational BART system by implementing quality seismic retrofits and using innovative solutions that meets cost and schedule requirements. The main objective of this project was to provide final plans and construction documents for the seismic retrofit design of the “A” Line South segment of BART system’s original aerial guideway structures. This project extends from the East Lewelling Boulevard underpass in unincorporated Alameda County to Decoto Road in Union City.

CHS Consulting Group developed conceptual- and final-design traffic management plans and construction staging plans for the entire project alignment from the East Lewelling Boulevard underpass to Union City. These plans specify the sequence of construction activities proposed to optimize the maintenance of traffic flow, efficiency of construction work, and acceptability to the public. Many of these locations are intersections with State Routes and major arterials, so the level of coordination involved review and inputs from Alameda County, Caltrans, and the Cities of Fremont, Hayward, and Union City. To achieve the desired results, CHS focused on major issues such as minimizing impacts to current traffic operations, and to businesses and residents within impacted areas.
