BART Oakland Airport Connector Design/Build Project Oakland, CA

This design/build project will provide a 3.2-mile BART extension between the Oakland Coliseum Station and Oakland International Airport. An Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) system will run primarily on an elevated guideway in the median of Hegenberger Road, the heavily-traveled main route to the terminal. Air traffic control concerns require one cut-and-cover tunnel at the intersection of Doolittle Drive and Hegenberger Road. The route continues on an elevated guideway to its destination at the airport terminal. The project includes two end-terminal stations: one at the Coliseum BART Station and one at the airport terminal. The AGT system will allow for future construction of one intermediate stop near the Doolittle/Hegenberger intersection.

As part of the design/build team led by the Flatiron/Parsons Joint Venture, CHS Consulting Group is providing traffic engineering services including traffic signal design and plans, signing and striping plans, traffic operations and engineering analysis, and maintenance-of-traffic plans. For this fast-track project, CHS modified traffic signal designs for 7 signalized intersections along Hegenberger Road. In addition, there are numerous non-signalized intersections along the route that require maintenance of traffic plans.. The project also requires extensive traffic alterations at the Doolittle/Hegenberger intersection. Extensive coordination is required among the design/build team, BART, Caltrans, Alameda County, the City of Oakland, and the Port of Oakland.

CHS is fully staffed at the BART OAC Project Office, and is on target to complete our contributions in a 6-month time frame, by mid-2011.
